My clients live on a busy street. The house had a steep, narrow driveway with many half-grown “junk” volunteer trees blocking views and making it dangerous to back out onto the busy street. The steep driveway often iced up in the winter leading to more than a couple of falls when getting the newspaper or mail. The driveway was also a less than welcoming first approach for visitors on foot. (See “Before pictures”, below.)
In response to this litany of problems, we:
- Widened the drive,
- Changed the grade in areas where there would be foot traffic,
- Added a parking pad that also provides room for a car to turn around,
- Added shallow stairs from the parking pad
- Added details that both blend in with and enhance the original 1940’s details
The new details include a curved brick retaining wall that coordinates with the original and new blue stone treads and details that replace the less appealing concrete. Iron railings and handrails, again, match the original details with minor adjustments to enhance safety and appearance.
