Transitional: Blending Classic & Modern Lines

| This kitchen in Silver Spring, MD gives a stylist spin to traditional materials. We used glass subway tiles in the same way that period kitchens used ceramic subway tiles — with a running bond pattern and contrasting grout. These tiles in a light greenish yellow are from ModWalls. We paired this tile with a custom concrete countertop in indigo, simple alder cabinets with a honey-colored stain, stainless steel appliances, black nickel cabinet pulls and other black accents. We used just a touch of honey onyx at the intersection of the tile and the countertop. The sheen of the polished onyx reflects just a hint of the stainless while the veins absorbed enough of the slate grout to create an elegant transition between the concrete counter and the glass tile. The onyx tile are miniature subway tiles also deployed with a running bond — adding further interest. |
| The predominant colors — indigo and straw/honey — are near compliments on the color wheel — giving a universal appeal. The palette is refined without being in any way bland. |
| The combination of simple lines and classic details help this kitchen is neither vintage nor overly modern. The retro lines of the kettle and toaster reproduced in modern stainless steel echo the transitional theme of the kitchen. We often blend modern and classic lines in remodeling older homes; the balance helps blend the classic grace of older homes with the clean lines of modern lifestyles. |
